Category: Music & Theatre Dates: Tuesday, 09 July 2013 to Saturday, 20 July 2013 Many people could be considering booking luxury London hotel breaks to attend the lavish production of the classic opera Tosca that coming to the Royal Opera House this summer. Running from July 9th to 20th 2013, Jonathan Kent's version of Giacomo Puccini's famed musical drama is set to feature a naturalistic staging that brings the full power of the iconic score and dramatic story to life. Originally performed in 1900, Tosca has become known as one of the true masterpieces of the operatic art form, proving a huge hit with audiences for more than a century and earning a place among the most frequently-staged operas of all time. It tells the story of Mario Cavaradossi, a painter living in early 19th-century Rome who agrees to help a fugitive escape, thereby setting into motion a chain of events that will ultimately lead to tragic consequences for himself and his lover, the singer Floria Tosca. Set in a world of political instability and menace, the work is known for its expansive and evocative musical score, which moves from the joyful arias that represent the love between Tosca and Cavaradossi to the dark and imposing themes associated with the villainous chief of police Scarpia, a ruthless and aggressive man who tortures his enemies. Just as Puccini's music is filled with authentic details, Kent's production will convey the beauty and danger of Rome in 1800 with amazing stagecraft and set design. The three-act show includes two intervals and lasts for approximately three hours, with the lyrics to be sung in Italian with English surtitles. This summer's run of shows will be followed next year by another series of performances taking place between May 10th and June 26th.
