Mayerling at the Royal Opera House

  • Category: Music & Theatre
  • Dates: Friday, 19 April 2013 to Saturday, 15 June 2013

Mayerling, a dark and emotional dance-based drama written by Kenneth MacMillan, will be performed at the Royal Opera House from April 19th to June 15th 2013.

The Royal Ballet show was originally performed in 1978 and is based on the true story of Rudolf, the emotionally unstable crown prince of Austria-Hungary, who is forced unwillingly into marriage and falls into a downward spiral that ends in the double suicide of he and his mistress.

Mayerling is set to the music of renowned composer Franz Liszt, offering a dramatic musical counterpoint to the powerful narrative and the amazing physical performances of the dancers.

The show is well known for its visual splendour, challenging choreography and willingness to push the boundaries of ballet as an art form, making this a must-see production.
