Gloriana at the Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera House will be staging a new production of the classic opera Gloriana from June 20th to July 6th 2013.

Directed by Richard Jones, this new version of Benjamin Britten's stirring work explores the tensions that exist between a person's official responsibilities and their deeper emotional needs.

Commissioned by the Royal Opera House to mark the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953, the opera weaves a story examining Queen Elizabeth I's complex and affectionate relationship with the Earl of Essex.

Gloriana features a libretto that mixes modern and archaic forms of English, while the score combines Britten's signature style with more traditional lute songs and courtly dance pieces associated with the Tudor era.

Luxury London hotel guests could take in this show while enjoying a Buckingham Palace Weekends deal at The Rubens at the Palace Hotel, which provides visitors with a complimentary bottle of Champagne on arrival.
