Fans of comic opera who are staying at luxury London hotel the Rubens at the Palace this spring will not want to miss David McVicar's celebrated production of Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier.

Set to be performed at the Coliseum in London from May 22nd until June 7th 2008, the opera offers a "romantic, fantastical depiction of the frivolous, philandering nobility of 17th century Vienna", according to LondonTown, features John Tomlinson as "bumptious" Baron Ochs and Janice Watson as leading soprano The Marschallin, Princess Marie Therese von Werdenberg.

David McVicar's production of Der Rosenkavalier is said to be one of his "supreme achievements", according to the Financial Times.

Edward Gardner will conduct the comic opera as music director, while other members of the cast include Edward Gardner, Sarah Connolly as Octavian, Sarah Tynan as Sophie while Herr von Faninal is played by Andrew Shore.

Der Rosenkavalier focuses on the romances of four principal characters, the aging Marschallin, handsome Octavian, bumbling Baron Ochs von Lerchenau and his fiancee Sophie.
