The Pitmen Painters

Event: The Pitmen Painters at Cottesloe Theatre
Dates: May 19th until June 25th 2008

The Pitmen Painters by Lee Hall has received excellent reviews so far and guests on theatre breaks in London this June who are staying at luxury London hotel the Rubens at the Palace may want to visit the Cottesloe Theatre to watch the production for themselves.

Inspired by the book by William Feaver, The Pitmen Painters is compared to the playwright Lee Hall's famous Billy Elliot production and comes to London from a successful debut at Live Theatre in Newcastle.

A story of class and politics, The Pitmen Painters divulges the tale of a group of Ashington miners in 1934 who hire a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class.

The group soon abandon the theory for practice and begin to paint, making friends with the most forward thinking artists of the time and having their work bought up by renowned collectors.

Nonetheless the group maintained their day jobs as miners.

A co-production between the Newcastle theatre and the National Theatre, the Guardian gave it four stars and claimed that the play feeds the souls of its audience.

Meanwhile, Metro described it as "witty and touching" while the Observer went so far as to call it "inspiring" and "important" as well as "deliciously comic".
