Oedipus at National Theatre: Olivier Theatre, South Bank

Event: Oedipus at National Theatre
Date: October 8th to January 4th

Ralph Fiennes will take on the title role for Jonathan Kent's production of Sophocles' tragedy Oedipus next month.

Afficionados of the story need no explanation of the events which will unfold but for those with less knowledge the story centres on the people of Thebes who are beset by a terrible curse.

The masses look to Oedipus to rid them of this affliction, and after consulting the oracle, he discovers he must find the late king's murderer.

His quest leads him to interrogate many men, which eventually leads to his own savage destiny.

According to Apokrisi.net, Fiennes will be joined on stage by Alan Howard, who will play the role of Teiresias and Clare Higgins as Jocasta.

Theatre fans looking for a weekend of culture can add to their experience by booking a suite at the luxury London hotel Rubens at the Palace and enjoying the It's Showtime package.

In addition to a full-English breakfast in the morning and a pre-theatre dinner, guests will also be given two tickets per stay to a production of their choice, meaning visitors can take in another show as well.
