Event: Love and Marriage in Renaissance Florence: The Courtauld Wedding Chests
Date: February 12th until 17th May
Those with an interest in beautifully-crafted antique furniture will not want to miss the Love and Marriage in Renaissance Florence exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery next month.
In renaissance Florence, one way in which powerful families celebrated marriage alliances between one another was to commission several decorative and expensive objects.
At the centre of this thinking were chests, which boasted lavish decorations using metals and elaborate paintings which told historic tales from Greece, Palestine and Rome.
Known as Cassoni, these were displayed in the husband's chamber and were generally used to store precious items such as jewellery and clothes.
The Courtauld exhibition will centre around two particularly striking chests which were ordered by Lorenzo Morelli in 1472 to celebrate his marriage to Vaggia Nerli.
History lovers and those who appreciate intricately-detailed pieces of furniture will love this showcase and something else they will enjoy is the comfort, class and quality of the luxury London hotel the Rubens at the Palace.
By booking the Suite Dreams package, couples on a break can enjoy a bottle of house champagne, chocolate-dipped strawberries and a three-course table d'hote meal for two.
