Hidden Gem

19/10/2006

The Rubens at the Palace Hotel, part of the Red Carnation Hotel Group and sister hotel to the Chesterfield Hotel in Charles Street, Mayfair, has a perfect location directly opposite The Royal Mews and Buckingham Palace and is within close proximity of St.James’s Park, Green Park and the Mall..

Mayfair Life recently went to their Two AA Rosette honoured Library Restaurant and found an elegant and intimate hidden gem of a restaurant, with its rich design, use of fabrics and luxurious seating combining to create a romantic atmosphere. The Library serves an a la carte selection of the finest English and International cuisine with daily specialities according to the season under the guidance of the head chef Daniel Collins.

On the day we visited we began with ‘Poached Oysters with smoked salmon, cucumber & chives’ and ‘Pan-fried Foie Gras with toasted walnut bread, sliced apple and crispy red onions’. Both dishes tasted great, the fresh ingredients combined well to produce lots of texture and flavour.

We followed that with the ‘Panache of Seafood which included salmon, scallops, prawns, and sea bass with steamed potatoes and baby spinach’ and ‘Venison with baked sweet potatoes, with green chilli and baby mix leaf salad’. Here again everything was of the highest quality, with the vension and sweet potatoes especially worthy of mention.

To finish we enjoyed the ‘Bea Tollman’s Honeycomb Ice Cream’ and the ‘Assiette of Desserts’ which was enough to satisfty even the sweetest toothed of you out there as it includes a small taster portion of all their desserts including Crème brulee (honey, whisky and drambruie, Lemon Posset (raspberries soaked in limoncello), Warm Sticky Toffee Pudding (with Madagascan boubon vanilla ice cream and honeycomb ice cream).

All the food was beautifully presented and served by friendly and helpful staff as typified by their genial restaurant manager Soleman Khaddour. The wine list is extensive and interesting with many wines by the glass and reasonably priced, starting from only £15.00 a bottle.
